Red Letter Day For Gargoyle Wharf

Gargoyle Wharf Gets The Planners Go-Ahead and Wins a National Home-Builder Design Award On the same day that Wandsworth Borough Council gave the go-ahead to regenerate the 13 acre riverside site at Gargoyle Wharf in Wandsworth, the consortium heard that it's design had won a National Home-Builder Design Award 2000 for the best housing project.

The site is owned by York Road Limited, which is a joint venture partnership between Rialto London, LCR Developments and Frogmore Estates. The mixed-use urban regeneration scheme will have an end value of £200million and will comprise of 658 newly built apartments including owner/occupier, shared ownership, rent and Live/work units. There is also 290,000sq.ft of commercial units consisting of a hotel, police station, health and fitness club, restaurant, shops and a car showroom, and community facilities including a health care centre, crèche and public house, all of which will provide significant employment.

York Road Limited intend to build the development over a period of five years, in six key phases, and expect the first phase to be available to purchasers in September 2001, with guide prices for the private apartments expected to start from £115,000. Designed by leading architects Broadway Malyan, the scheme has been designed to open the site to the public, with riverside walkway, pontoon for river based activities, new areas of parkland and a footway and cycle network.

A central open plaza and the creation of marginal habitats for flora and fauna will also help provide an attractive environment for residents and the local community to live, work and enjoy their leisure. Improvements to the local transport system including priority bus lanes, CCTV cameras between Wandswoth Town Station and the site, bus shelters and electronic countdown signs at key bus stops, will also be provided.
